Dear All,

You may be aware that the election for the New US Senator from MA for the seat of the Late Edward Kennedy is being held on December 8 2009. The US citizens of South Asian origin can play an important role in selecting a Senator who will be sympathetic to us. I have met Mr. Alan Khazei who is the son of an immigrant from Iran. Alan Khazei is a grass root organizer who strated the program of City Center for educating children of Boston. Bill Clinton took this model and started Americorp with Ted Kennedy's help.

If you have not heard of Alan Khazei please visit http://www.alanforsenate.com and see his positions on the issues that you my be interested.

I will be pleased to correspond with you and discuss any issues you may have at ramkiyengar@netscape.net

In future I hope to support a candidate of South Asian origin for the US Congress.

Best regards,

Dr. Ram K. Iyengar

If you wish to meet Mr. Alan Khazei who is a candidate for the US Senate please let me know either through this blog or directly at ramkiyengar@netscape.net.

Alan believes in “Big Citizenship” where citizens guide the process of governance. If you wish to meet with Alan and discuss with him how the South Asian Community can play a role in the governance of the country, both domestically and internationally, please respond suggesting few dates and venues.

Please remember December 8 2009 the day we in Massachussetts elect a new senator for the US Senate.

I strongly recommend that you consider Alan Khazei a son of an immigrat doctor from Iran and who has conceived and executed the City Year in Boston. Alan does not accept contributions from lobbyist and will not work for special interests. He will be a “senator for the citizens” fighting for our cause.

Please vote on December 8 2009 and consider if Alan Khazei deserves you vote.

General Wesley Clark released the following statement in an email to the Khazei campaign:

“I am proud today to announce my enthusiastic and strong support for Alan Khazei for U.S. Senate in Massachusetts. At this critical time, we need more patriots and public servants like Alan Khazei representing the people’s interests in Washington.

I’ve known Alan since 2003 when I visited City Year, the national urban Peace Corps Alan founded in Boston. What I discovered was a deeply patriotic individual of true personal integrity. Alan Khazei loves our country and has devoted his entire adult life to serving and empowering people to better our communities and bring much needed change. And in City Year, I witnessed the closest thing I have seen to the military in civilian service. I was so inspired by Alan Khazei and his program that I signed on to work with Alan and President Clinton to bring City Year to Little Rock, Arkansas.

When it comes to foreign affairs, Alan Khazei is one candidate who won’t need on the job training.  Alan has met with leaders in over thirty countries, has a curious mind, a multi-cultural perspective, is a student of history and understands the complexities of national security in the 21st Century. He has taken the time to study the situation in Afghanistan. Rather than make the easy appeal of simply bringing our troops home, Alan has done the hard work of detailing how to do so while insuring Afghanistan does not once again become a haven for terrorists. And, at the same time, Alan presents a comprehensive strategy for defeating the terrorists globally. Alan, more than anyone else running for Senate in Massachusetts, presented a detailed approach and compelling, new ideas for accomplishing our goals.

Alan has a track record of bringing change to our country and to Washington by working effectively with members of Congress and by leading the service movement to pass three major pieces of national legislation that helped build AmeriCorps, our domestic peace corps, including the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act. Alan rolls up his sleeves; he innovates; he takes action; he sticks to it; he inspires people to join the cause, and he consistently delivers. And Alan understands that the key to change is empowering the rest of us to take action and pressure Washington to heed our collective voices.

His campaign of Big Citizenship – calling on all of us to get involved in our politics and democracy — is precisely what is needed in this moment of great challenge. And Alan has refused to take special interest PAC and lobbyist money so that he is only beholden to us and our people’s common interests.

Alan Khazei is a unique and worthy successor to Ted Kennedy. I strongly encourage my fellow patriots and concerned citizens in Massachusetts to support the best our country has to offer and vote for Alan Khazei on December 8th.”
